Dianne's Bio
Like a lot of Border Collie handlers and trainers, I come from an equine background. I trained and showed hunter/jumpers in my early years and finished up with reining and cow horses in the AQHA, NRHA and NRCHA. I still love to ride a good horse, no matter what the discipline. The switch to training working dogs came about the same time as I started into the reining and cow horse world. A lot of the same principles are involved but much like reining, the USBCHA offers a venue where finesse and perfection are rewarded. I like finesse and perfection in everything. Ask my children.
I began by training my own dogs. Then I started taking outside dogs in for training about six years ago and have never looked back. I have been very fortunate to get my start and continued guidance from Patrick Shannahan, my friend, travel partner and mentor. Until I started breeding my own dogs and running outside dogs, all my dogs (minus my first one) came from Patrick. He advised me on those that didn’t. I have been very fortunate to have owned and bred some phenomenal individuals in the time I have been involved in this sport. I give most of the credit to Patrick who patiently lent me his support and knowledge of both dogs and sheep. My biggest learning curve was/is the sheep and learning to read them, in order to help my dogs. Like a lot of people I was not raised around sheep or cattle. It took along time to understand the relationship between dogs and sheep and how to communicate to move them around a field or course in the proper manner. No matter what people say, the Zen method does not work.
Currently I am running and trying to qualify three open dogs for the Finals. Zorro (Owned by William Rill and bred by Geri Byrne), Fame (Owned by myself and William Rill and bred by me) and Petal (Owned by myself and bred by Robin Nuffer). Petal is the youngest of the three and just moved to open. Zorro has qualified for the nursery finals and twice for the open finals so he is far more seasoned. Fame is young but fairly seasoned as he has qualified for both the nursery finals in Virginia and the open finals in Colorado. Petal is my wild card this year. I just moved her to open so we will see how she does. I expect her to rise to the occasion and do well. She just needs experience.

Lyle's Bio
I started training dogs back in 1986 with my first Border Collie, Jock, purchased from Jack Knox as a pup. I had never experienced sheep before this time so when I got them, I got the dog to help me out! Little did I know the adventure Jock was to start me on. He was quite a handful and to this day Jack laughs at what a wild but strong dog Jock was. So it began, my two children Doug (now 32) and Val (29) helped me every step of the way managing the farm and traveling to dog trials. Fortunately for me I was able to go to Yorkshire, England twice to work as a shepherd on the Dales, my daughter with me as companion and assistant shepherd! We learned a lot about sheep which has helped me learn to handle my dogs.
I started training dogs not long after I started running Jock in trials. A man told me, "if you can train him, you can train anything!" So now, almost 27 years later I am still training dogs, Border Collies and the occasional upright working dog.
I have about 12 of my own dogs and usually 6+ dogs in for training. My husband Matt works dogs also when he's not playing the cello for the prestigious Cincinnnat Symphony Orchestra.
He has two girls that grew up on the farm with us, now off to,college.
My educational background is a B.S. in Elementary Ed and Physical Education, K-12. I try and use my teaching education in both my seminars, lessons, as well as training dogs.
I've won and placed in many trials throughout the years. Here are a few of the highlights.
-winning the Blue Ridge Open SDT in 1992 with Jock. Our first win with my first dog!
-winning the NAILE trial in 1994 with Mick (overall winner) but also winning day one with Cap, placing 2 day 2 with Cap.
-winning the Bluegrass 3 years in a row with Cap! (the overall as well as each day)
-placed 4th at the National finals in 1996, placed 4th with Jace at the Nationals another year. Most years I have been in the top 17 at the Nationals with my dogs Jock, Mick, Cap, Jim, and Shep!
-2007 I won the prelims at Meeker, CO with Shep, and placed 12th with Moses. Shep also won the "best drive" award in the double lift, and ended up 5th overall.
-more recently, June 2011, Shep and I won the prestigious trial, "The Big One" , both days, on unbroke sheep and a 900 yard outrun!
- September 2011, Shep and I traveled to Penrith, England to compete in the World Trial! Competing with the 240 best handlers in the world, we place 16th !
